Alan Varela was born on October 24, 1986 in Coimbra, Portugal. He began his football career with hometown club União de Leiria, where he made his debut in the Segunda Liga in 2005. However, it wasn't until he moved to FC Porto that Varela truly blossomed as a player.

Varela joined FC Porto in January 2007 from União de Leiria and immediately made a name for himself. He quickly became one of the most promising young players in Portuguese football, and soon earned a reputation as a star in the making.

In just his second season at Porto, Varela won the Portuguese Super Cup and helped the team reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. His performances were so impressive that he was named the Best Young Player in Portugal in 2009.
